Do 6 year olds need an Allowance?

I don't know what these kids are learning in school these days. But somehow somewhere my son has learned that parents give money to kids who do things around the house. He has mentioned it several times for the past few months. I have no idea what kids get these days for an allowance or even at which age should they start getting one. My parents certainly did not give me an allowance. Chores was the "rent" you paid for them to provide you with shelter, food and clothes. But - who wants to be like their parents? So, I got suckered in - Two weeks ago we gave it a try.

Chores for a 6 Year Old.
Make your Bed
Dust (Saturday)
Help take out the Recycle bins (every other week)
Bring in the Recycle Bins
Get the mail
Yard Work (pick up sticks - live on a wooded lot)

And for that he gets - $8 bucks every other week. ($16 a month). I basically, just pulled that number out of the air. So, every other Friday - he gets $8 cold hard cash. $4 of which he puts in his piggy bank - (pay your self first). The remaining $4 can go to whatever. He can buy his lunch at school, rent a movie, rent a video game - whatever.

Thankfully, the 4 year old has not learned this thing called "allowance" yet. He still gets very excited about getting the Sunday Paper for FREE.

We've gone the way of finding "jobs" outside their normal chores. For our six year old, he takes the trash out a couple of nights a week, and whenever he helps me clean out my truck, help me with my stuff around the house, he can earn some money. He maybe gets around 8-10 bucks a month, but it is not an automatic thing just yet. I'm sure I spend more than 16 bucks a month buying him stuff he wants, so I'm glad to hear of how others are doing it (and how to also save and appreciate money). I heard an idea once about splitting three ways. One is for your spending money, one is your helping others money, and one is your saving money. I'd love to do something like that with my kids.

Great hearing your ideas!
