Some of the veterinarians I used to work occasionally used colloidal silver as an anti-microbial agent. In some cases, it's an effective treatment (used incorrectly, you turn blue - among other problems).
Because it can't be patented though, no pharmaceutical company is going to touch it and find ways to use it properly.
